- Another cost-saving tip is we do "big" birthday parties on even birthdays only, beginning at age 6. Until age 6, we celebrate birthdays at home with lots of balloons, a homemade cake, and family fun. After that, every other year, we spring for a cool venue to celebrate the big day with friends, like a pizza place or the swimming pool. I think that the kids feel special at both kinds of parties, and it sure saves money this way. For our twins, the family party is all they've ever known, and I'm pretty sure they feel like celebrities on their big day.--Rebecca Z. Jones
