Rhyme on a Dime Using Recycled Materials

To prep for this project, start a "Craftcycling" bag to collect recycled materials in. Tell your child to be on the lookout for lids in the recycle bin, as well as magazines and catalogs that the family has finished reading. Every time you collect something for your craft, put it in your "Craftcycling" bag!

        Step 1: Things You'll Need

Collect the items from the materials list.
Little Hands Tip: Talk about all the things you recycle in your home and neighborhood.

        Step 2: I Spy a Cat, a Hat, and a Bat

Spend time cutting out magazine pictures with your child. Look for pictures that will both represent rhymes (example: cat picture for "cat", which would rhyme with a picture of a "bat"), and fit inside the lids you've collected for the craft. Find at least 3 pairs of rhymes.
Little Hands Tip: You don't have to stop at 3. See how many words you can rhyme.

        Step 3: Group Your Loot

Group lids based on color or size. Discuss the colors of the lids and ask your child to show you which lids are biggest and smallest.
Little Hands Tip: What is your favorite color?

        Step 4: Trace It

Point out to your child that the lids you're using for the project are all circles. What else in the kitchen is a circle? Pick a rhyming pair of pictures and two lids that are the same color or size. Place the lids on top of the pictures. Using a pencil, help your child trace around the lid onto the picture.
Little Hands Tip: Where else can you find circles in the house?

        Step 5: Cut It Out

Carefully cut out the circles you traced. Repeat for additional rhymes & lids.

        Step 6: Stick To It

Glue rhymes in the center of the underside of the lids.

        Step 7: Magnet Mania

Cut a small piece of magnet tape. Remove backing, and stick on lid.

Step 8: Now You Can Rhyme Anytime!

Ask your child to match the rhymes, either on the table top or fridge. Then, ask him to group the pieces by size or color!
