Music for Growing and Learning
Music can help with language, reading, and even math! Here are some simple activities that will help your child grow and learn with music every day.
Words to sing by
Try making up new words to a simple song and help your child to do the same. He might make funny rhymes, include his own name, use silly sounds, or tell a while new story. And remember, every time you sing a favorite song your child can learn new words!
Songs and stories
Many songs have been turned into children's books you can read and sing together. You can also help your child create her own drawings or book from a favorite song, or add a song to a favorite story.
Drumming dialogue
Encourage your child to create his own drum rhythms and patterns that you can copy. Then ask your child to copy you. Start with just a few beats and add a beat or change the pattern each time. Invite your child to count the beats.
Musical names
In a circle, ask your child to clap or sing her name in a fun way. Help your child repeat the name rhythms and songs.
Body music
Invite your child to move to music with different sounds – fast/slow, high/low, loud/soft and let his body do what the music does. Offer your child colorful scarves or streamers to enhance his movements.
