Kermit the Frog

Kermit the Frog first appeared on Jim Henson’s television show Sam and Friends in 1955, more than a decade before Sesame Street. Back then he looked more like Kermit the Lizard -- he had no collar and rather than froggie flippers, he had regular feet. He was originally constructed from Jim Henson’s mother’s spring coat, and two halves of a ping-pong ball for eyes.

Kermit joined Sesame Street in 1969. Funny, ironic, and always the voice of reason, he is the calm in the eye of the storm. Kermit is an understanding, genuine fellow who knows what’s important in life.

Kermit starred in The Muppet Show, as well as the Muppet movies, including The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper. But even when he became a big movie star, he still kept a pad on Sesame Street.
