About the Character
Linda’s role as Sesame Street’s deaf librarian was the longest-running role of any physically challenged person in a television series, providing a positive role model for hearing and non-hearing children alike.
Linda uses sign language to communicate with her friends, and occasionally speaks. Her dog, Barkley, understands some sign language commands.
About the Actor
Bove joined Sesame Street in 1971, becoming a full-time cast member in 1977. She has also appeared on Happy Days, the soap opera Search for Tomorrow, and in the national touring production of Children of a Lesser God. In 1963, Bove became a founding member of the National Theatre of the Deaf, and in 1991, she and her husband founded DeafWest, a resident sign-language theater. The theater provides stage productions and creative opportunities to the hearing-impaired community in Los Angeles. In 2005, Bove joined the company’s touring production of Big River.
