About the Character
Buffy was the only folk singer and songwriter to join the permanent cast of Sesame Street. She was on the show regularly from 1976 until 1981, sometimes accompanied by her son, Dakota Starblanket Wolfchild. As the first Native American cast member, she taught everyone about the Native American culture and lifestyle.

Saskatchewan native Buffy Sainte-Marie Wolfchild’s songs have been recorded by many artists, including Elvis Presley, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, and Johnny Mathis. She co-wrote the song Up Where We Belong, performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, and it received the 1982 Academy Award for Best Song. She wrote many of her own songs for the show, including, C is for Cody, The Muskrat Song, and I’m Gonna Be a Country Girl Again.
